So you want to be a bartender?

So I'm running around behind the bar, doing my thing and then I get stopped and people ask me "How can I do what you do?"
A couple of questions need to be answered first.

Are you trustworthy?

Are you good with people?
We're talking about people that are drunk and mean?

If yes, to both there is a chance to have a place behind the bar.

This part goes (really) without saying - making drinks isn't the hard part, it's remembering customers' names and what they drink. Also remember the last story or situation they discussed with you. If you're good they'll seek you out for a good time.

Now here's what you do:

  • Get hired and do whatever it takes to get a shift. Get your foot in the door (bus tables, wash dishes, barback, serve food, be the doorman)
  • Befriend a bartender. They (the bartender) may show you the ins and outs of making drinks
  • Go to a bartending school.
  • You really need to be on the ball, because if you are a party person, don't get in trouble with the law. The owner of the bar needs shifts covered not stories.
  • Working for a staffing company may place you behind a bar quicker than you are ready for! Hospitality staffers work in many different locations and events. MOST of the events have a very limited liquor chocies in the  portable bar. Most of times you would only make some of the most basic drinks         ( Rum and Coke) ( Vodka and OJ) (Scotch on the rocks). The draw back is that if you don't have a seasoned person (someone that knows what they are doing) working with you to help you out you'll get in the weeds fast.
  • FREE Tip: NEVER EVER put a GLASS
  • in the ice bin - Use an ice scoop
  • or  a Mixing tin. If the glass cracks or chips, how do you find the broken pieces!!!
Take an online bartender course to learn what to do and how to mix drinks
Check out the sites below - one is very helpful and free - just your e-mail.
